Training Provisions

HIAP will demonstrate a range of sample tests for Client engineers, who are required to provide helmet samples for this purpose. This session will be recorded and made available to Client. Additionally, HIAP will provide a datasheet and user manual for the test rig. The training will specifically cover test methods developed for safety helmet testing, including those utilized in previous consultancy projects by HIAP.

Tailored to Client’s specific interests, HIAP will offer training on data acquisition techniques using various headforms and sensors, including:

Hybrid III headform: Typically equipped with wired sensors, primarily the nine accelerometers package (NAP) in a 3-2-2-2 array configuration.

EN17950 headform: Commonly uses a wireless sensor system supplied by DTS. Training will include years of accumulated experience in employing this headform and its wireless sensors.

Both headform systems (NAP and DTS’s wireless sensors) are capable of measuring head kinematics with six degrees of freedom, which includes three translational accelerations and three rotational accelerations/velocities across three axes.

HIAP possesses extensive expertise in high-speed video photography, utilizing specific camera settings that are significantly more cost-effective (approximately £5,000) compared to traditional high-speed video cameras (typically over £100,000). Training will cover optimal settings for recording impact tests at 1000Hz with a resolution of 1080P, ensuring high image quality. The training will also instruct on setting up the optimal lighting, background, camera, and lens settings, such as the back focal distance, and how to automate camera triggering from the test rig’s control unit.

HIAP will provide Client with a software interface that automates the processing of headform kinematics data using appropriate filters. Comprehensive training will be offered on data measurement, processing and the calculation of head injury metrics, such as the BrIC values. Reference values and examples will be included to facilitate understanding and application.
